Sorry if this was already posted, but i couldn't find it in the search. How often should the oil in a 996 be changed? I have heard/read anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 miles. Can someone please confirm the correct mileage? This is for a non TT

This has been covered many, many times. I recommend following the owners manual unless you drive in a extreme environment. I consider everything extreme except steady highway miles.

I worry about going 15K miles between changes especially when you are not driving a lot of miles per year. I do mine every 5 - 6 K miles. Also decided not to use Mobil 1 any more because of the reduction in ZDDP. Next change I will go to Castrol Syntec 5W -40 which at least has an SL rating. I would stay away from any SM rated oils like Mobil 1 in a pre-2004 engine.

OK, here's my $0.02 FWIW

I'm used to oil changed regularly at 5k intervals (Mobil 1, factory filters)

on my cars (M3, 996 C2, Audi). However, given that all the factory recommendations

at 10k or above these days on European cars, I've been doing some research

to find out if this is overkill. (LN Engineering, Charles Navarro has some good info.)

Last oil change, I ran 7500 miles (incl. ~10 hrs track use) on Mobil 1, then sent the used

oil in to LN for Oil Analysis (My 2003 996 has ~59k). The results came back that the oil was fine,

and the oil quality was still significantly ABOVE the recommended thresholds for almost all

of the indicators, with no indication of any lubrication-related/wear-related engine issue.

Now that I've established a baseline for this motor, I'll continue to track it further.

Again, I'm not prescribing anything, but I suspect the factory recommendations at 10k

intervals are probably OK.

Hope this helps.

interesting. Thank you for the oil report sanjeev. To Wicked996 - i've been using Amsoils products for the past year and have been happy. the 5w 40 oil and their svg gear oil for my differentials.

Once per year, or 15k whichever comes first. I change it in November so it has fresh oil going into the winter months. Mobil1 0w-40 per factory recommendations. So, in practice, the oil in my 996 gets changed about every 7k.

I change my 996 C2 oil every 5000 miles or one year whichever comes first. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic W0-40 oil.

If you read LN Engineering's web page about IMS preservation... They encourage an oil change every 6 months or 5k miles and a 5w-40 weight oil with other additives. They mention Syntec by Castrol as a favorite.

Thanks! putting in Amsoil 5w40 and SVG 75w-90 in the tranny this weekend!

It has been posted before related to engine warm up. And it is interesting, but that guy really focused on lubrication and flow without much focus on additives like ZDDP. He alludes to "harmful" additives that can cause damage to the environment by causing problems to catalytic converters.

I took it all in and swallowed it with a grain of Italian salt.

And.... :welcome:
