My cheap Sears battery maintainer appears to have fried the battery in my 06 BoxsterS. I hadn't visited the storage garage for a month or so and found the maintainer dead along with the battery. When I tried to use a new one through the 12volt lighter style socket on the passenger side, it tried to charge for about three seconds, kicked off for three, and would try again. That repeated about 10 times or so before I figured I should disconnect it. I got one feeble groan from the horn and could hear relays clicking every time it tried.

Haven't gone through the hassle of tearing out the fender liner to open the hood yet to make sure, but sure seems like the maintainer must have just kept charging, and fried the battery and then itself. Battery was original so at the end of it's life anyway. Here's my question. Is there any reason at all to replace the dead battery before I take the car out of storage in the spring? Since it's already dead, putting a new battery in will just require a maintainer and risk killing that one.

Get a decent maintainer! CTEK is popular and apparently quality. The anti-sulfation versions are best. I use the Porsche branded version.

You can use your new battery to put voltage on the terminals of the fuse panel to pop the hood.
