location of audio amplifire on 996

Not sure what year you have, what stereo system, Cabrio or coupe? At any rate I have attached the diagram that should apply to your amp location. Should be in the bonnet (trunk in front)

just behind where the spare tire is located and behind a metal shield.

You should do a search on this site as lots of folks have had lots of discussions about preferences, challenges, and issues with the stereo systems. If you have the MOST set up or BOSE it will be

even more complicated. Many choose to just replace all components due to the odd 6 channel configuration.

Good luck, and remember to do a search here as there is already lots of info.

mine is a 2000 coupe

it has 2 speakers in the front doors and a cdr22 and 2 speakers on the dash and 2 in the rear quarters

i def no it isnt a bose system what is a MOST system

A MY2000 would not have BOSE at it came out in MY2002. MOST is fiber optic wiring that cam out in MY2003.

Your amp (if you have one) should be in the front trunk on the right side next to the spare tire.

Check your option codes (on the sticker under the front hood). If it does not say M490 or M680 then you do not have an amp.

reason i ask is because i have changed all the speakers in the car to alpine speakers and have taken out the tuned ports in the doors and have done the MDF-DYNAMAT baffles mod for the doors with 16cm alpines aswell

and to be honest it sounds worse than it did before!!!!

i cant turn the base up past -1 or it all distorts and sounds like something you would find in an old van!

i am thinking that the next step is to change the amp to get a better sound what do you recon ?

You are asking the wrong guy about sound - when I wanted a better sound for my Carrera I put on a Porsche Sport Exhaust. :D

I am sure other members here can give you some good advice though...

Your components must have good synergy to sound their best. I would go to a dealer that installs Alpine systems and have them hook up one of their players and amps to your speakers or listen to a recommended system with the same speakers. I am guessing your speakers don't mate with the original setup. I have a cdr210 that looks like the picture above and it is definitely lofi, sterile and digital sounding.

My MY02 Targa was equipped with the BOSE system with the standard CD220 Becker head unit. The sound was pretty dreadful with distorted/overwhelming bass....even with the bass tone control set at a minimum position.

I replaced the Becker head unit with a Pioneer AVIC-Z3 nav system and magically the audio improved immeasureably.

I would second bgwvdave's suggestion that you try to find a shop where you can selectively exchange "up-speaker" components. Your new speaker set-up probably just exacerbates the poor quality of the Becker head unit. I would definately start with the head unit..."garbage in = garbage out".

The amp is in the trunk behind the spare tire or where the spare tire would be if you don't have one. The Cd changer is also there if you have one like me. :D

I also have a 2000 C2 so it should be the same. But here's some pics just so you know.

Also concerning new audio since I'm going to be changing everything soon anyways too, if you have the money and found a good deal on the head unit, amp, speakers then go for it. If your pressed for cash (like me) then just go for a head unit you like and get a amp and speakers later. Changing the head unit should help some anyways since you can change more settings such as bass, treble, and even on some units the graphic equalizer.
