Hi Everyone!

I'm trying to figure out what is going on with the wifey's 2003 Boxster 44K miles. It started with white smoke during startup..usually in the morning

and it would last for over a minute then go away. So, took the advice from reading all the post about AOS and went ahead and changed the AOS and Jtube.

Worked great....for 2 months. This morning I started it up and....white smoke.

Few things I did:

I drained out the oil form the oil filter, because last oil changed I put in 9 quarts...8.7 is what it requires.

Took out the throttle body and cleaned it.

Took out the J tube and noticed little oil....cleaned that as well.

btw... A few days ago when I started it up in the morning... I did hear the air pump whining...like a high pitch whine. Not the normal sound of the air pump.

Questions:

1. Can the AOS go bad in such a short period?

2. Can overfilling the oil to 9 quarts cause the smoke or cause the AOS to go bad?

3. Whining air pump...can this be a part of the smoke?

Thanks

Check out this thread. Some good discussion on smoking

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=30223

Bottom line - these engines smoke. My 2001 doesn't do it often, but I can set my watch by it in the early spring and fall. When it starts to get cool outside - I get smoke. Call it a puff...call it whatever. I get a white "puff" or steam and/or oil. With that in mind, in the above thread, there is good discussion on steam, versus smoke.

Based on everything you've changed already, it sounds normal. If the throttle body is clean, the AOS is doing it's job. Since the cylinders lay flat, oil can leak past and pool overnight.

People see the smoke and think that a car of this "prestige" shouldn't do it. I had a buddy of mine with an older 911 that said "if the car doesn't smoke when I start it in the morning, I know it's time to check the oil." :)

As for the .3 you overfilled - there is lots of debate on here about that as well. It may have added to your smoking...but it's such a small overfill, I don't think you have anything of concern.

I know that my last 996 would give AOS symptoms when it was over filled. Smoke on start up and at high revs around corners. Drained away the excess oil and the smoke went away.. Just my experience. These cars do not like to be over filled..

Thanks for all the replies...

So far so good. I drained out some oil from the oil filter. Started it up this morning and NO smoke. I'll check again tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks.
