dear loren ,my friend here in greece, owns a 2003 3,6 liters 996. it has 50k and almost from new he says that when it gives her, some doughnuts(hard circles)and then stops it puffs smoke from the opposite site exhaust .which means:right turns-left exhaust smokes.left turns-right exhaust smoke.also it smokes when he drives it hard for 10-15 minutes, turns off for 20 minutes, when he starts the engine again it smokes a lot for a while, then its ok.he changed a lot of different oils, same thing.he tried with 1 lit less oil, same thing.any suggestions??

Should be normal (harmless) - Many others have noticed the same symptoms after some hard track driving etc.

It seems as if some excess oil pools in some areas of the motor and finds its way into the combustion chambers and when the car is started this small amount of oil just burns off.

BMW motorcycles have been known to do the same thing due to their flat cylinder orientation as well, especially if left for extended periods on their side stand - which tilts the motor to one side.

i don't know if porsche has made changes to engine lubrication system or breathe system to this model, but he asked 2-3 guys with older 996 and they didn't have any problems like that
