Just traded my 97 Boxster (with outside temp display) for a 2003 Boxster S, and was surprised to discover that it does not have an outside temp display. Read in some forums that the dealer could "turn-on" the OBC, which would enable the display. Yesterday, dealer tried without success. Anyone have experience with the '03 model and making this work? I'm hoping to avoid the fourth-stalk install (or dash switch), but maybe that's necessary. When I look closely at the center display, below the odometer and tripometer, I see other unlit characters, but nothing that looks like outside temp. Thanks

Please do a search as this items has been covered many times.

On MY01 and later Boxsters with the newer style instrument cluster you must add the OBC stalk or a switch to see anything in the display.

Was the thread I used to do the 4 stalk swap. With parts and dealer time it will cost about 300, gave me the cruise and the OBC. The stalk swap takes about two hours, and 3o minutes of dealer time to turn it on. They have to code the DME, then tell it that it has cruise, the thread above will give more info. After doing this, I could do it again in an hour. Where are you at? Someone might be close enough to help you out.

I think the newest version of Durametric will turn on the computer. Check them out....

If you just want to see the outside temp you can do this with just 1 wire.

That sounds perfect. My Boston area dealer tech wasn't able to code the computer. All I want is the outside temp. Could you post instructions for the one-wire mod? Thanks very much.

They need to enter the car's model code in the DME or no programming can be done. As a dealer they should already know this.

Try another dealer or shop.

They need to enter the car's model code in the DME or no programming can be done. As a dealer they should already know this.

Try another dealer or shop.

The dealer tech, who has been great on many repairs, said that he tried both the newer and older system, but didn't make it. I was going to print the Renntech mod instructions for the added switch and give them to him for review and another try. Not really interested in the fourth stalk mod. Does the aforementioned "one-wire" fix also require reprogramming? Thanks for your assistance.

But the OBC still has to be turned on. As Loren said the tech needs to enter the order type/model number in the DME, which for a S is 986320. Then he has to start the automatic search all over ago. Then go to the instrument cluster. Then go to coding. Change the coding from without OBC to with OBC. You cannot turn on the OBC unless these steps are followed for 2003-2004.

I do not know why the techs cannot figure this out, because there is a prompt "Order type ?" when you try to change the instrument cluster coding, because the order type is missing from the DME. Instead the DME has three --- for the order type. You enter the order type in the DME, then instead of seeing the three dashes you see the order type that was just entered. Once that has been entered you cannot go straignt to the instrument cluster coding. You have to start the automatic sear all over again, then go to the instrument cluster, then to coding.

Watch your instrument cluster while this is being done. Once the coding is changed to with OBC the instrument cluster lights will turn off, then go back on. There will be a gong sound. Your trip odometer will reset to 0 miles. Then you know the instrument cluster coding has been changed.
