Just had car serviced at 40,000 miles. Last service was at 25,000 miles. Am using Castrol Syntec Oil. I am the original owner and the car is used as a commuter with most of the mileage being highway miles. Car runs great except for some minor issues. Shop cut open oil filter and found some small silver metallic type particles. They dropped the pan and said the oil and pan looked free of metal. Any recommendations on who I can send the metal fragments and oil to for analysis? I'd like someone to give me a good guess where they are coming from?

The shop thinks its the IMS bearing going. The car has been making a rattling/ball bearing type sound during the first 2-3 miles as the car warms up but this sound disappears after the car comes to temperature. Any thoughts?

If I have the IMS bearing replaced with the L&N bearing, can anyone give me the names of the NJ/Eastern PA repair shops that have the most experience with this upgrade. Also, while I'm having the upgrade done, is there anything else I should have done for this year and model car while the repair shop performs the upgrade? What should an IMS bearing upgrade cost me (labor and parts)?

Thanks

Dan

Jake has a good video of an engine that has "issues" on his website!! Go to flatsix and spend sometime there and I'll bet you'll find what your looking for. I have to ask. Did you baby the engine. After talking to Jake and reading the material he leans towards if you baby the engine and run to tall a gear you stress the bearing and the variocam. How long between oil changes?? I've been changing every ~4000 miles or less so I can check the oil samples. Are you the first owner? Thanks for the information. E :o

Dan,

I have been sending my Porsche oil samples for many years to Blackstone Labs in Fort Wayne, IN for analysis and have been pleased with their analysis and comments on the results. See their website at: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

They will send you sampling kits upon request. I think they charge $22.50 for normal anayses. Worth the cost IMHO.

Good luck.

I replaced my IMS bearing as a precaution. I posted what it cost me. The bearing that came out was fine. The L&N bearing is much beefier. If you change it you won't regret it. My car is a 2001 C4S with 25kmiles.
