Add a Nav Drive to Carrera 2S, to get Navigation on my PCM

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to upgrade my '06 Carrera S to use the factory screen to get navigation. I know that I need to buy a nav drive and probably some cables, and I have asked around and researched the forums and have seen other people do it, but the problem I am having is, when researching the forums, and calling local Porsche dealership, I have come across about 7-8 different part numbers for the Nav Drive, I have gotten 997.642.257.03 or 997.642.135.XX or 997.642.137.xx.

I gave my vin to the dealer and he couldnt help me either...

Is there anyone on here who knows enough to guide me in the right direction? I can tell you that my car would take the horizontal Nav drive.

Look in PET.

Either use the serial number component of your VIN to identify the part (against the chassis information listed against each part), or if you know your PCM part number, find the matching DVD unit that way (identical chassis information listed).

Be sure to fit a part with a matching software level too.

I bought complete kit from suncoast porsche shop in the end after trying to find it on Ebay. My car is '06 made after 06/06 - means it required most recent version of DVD drive, horizontal. I saw only vertical ones on Ebay, so, went to suncoast. They had this kit for $2300 or so, it has all harnesses, optical links, etc. Issue is - if your car never had cd changer nor navigation - most likely nothing in your trunk is pre-wired, so you need all those optical wires and links and they are hard to find. Ebay usually has only DVD units without any accessories.

Then I got it installed at dealer for $500 as it happened it required some drilling to properly put optical links into the car. So, if you plan on DIY I cannot say much, unfortunately.

Search online - for DVD drives you`ll see there 2 pairs of part numbers - one pair for vertical drives, one pair for horizontal ones. If you have car made before 06/06 - most likely you will need part with smaller number.

The simplest and most trouble free route is to buy the retro fit kit. It will include all the parts you need, brackets , screws , cables , and most importantly the software updates and map DVD. If you try to buy the parts cheaper ie second hand or e bay , you will be waiting a long time to get the corrrect match for your model of PCM. If you dont match the PCM with the navigation drive , there can be isues with the system recognising the new DVD drive and it working correctly. Its also possible your PCM unit will require a software update to work with the new DVD drive , so if you "go it alone" you will need to track down software too. If you are not technically minded , fitting this hardware and understanding the protocols of MOST ring devices can be quite daunting. There are some good write ups on retro fitting over on planetporsche.net under the electronics and DIY sections including pictures. The cayman 911 and boxster all use the same PCM and so the retro fitting procedure is basically the same.
