I have been reading all the threads on IMS and RMS failures and how many of you replace these when you have your clutches repaired. However I never hear of anybody with Tiptronic Transmissions proactively having the IMS and RMS replaced. Several questions.

1. Are the Tiptronic transmissions as susceptable to IMS failures and RMS leakage?

2. IF so, could you share your experiences with replacing these in those Pcars with Tiptronic Transmissions?

Thanks Jim (04 C4S Cab Tiptronic, 33K mi)

The answer is simple --

they are the same engine design and thus are just as susceptible.

Manual Transmissions on P-Cars often need clutch replacements at some point in their lifetime.

The additional labor to do the IMS is small -- thus it is economical to consider an IMS-Retrofit

at the time.

I have one Tip that i have done and IMS Retrofit for -- but we were swapping the engine DUE TO AN IMS Failure.

I have a second Tip that will get a new transmission, and I will do an IMS Retrofit when I pull

that transmission.

I have read in several locations that Tiptronics suffer less from RMS issues because the transmission is supported differently.

As far as IMS is concerned, no difference.

I think it is more likely that there are just fewer Tips.

Thread revival time.... smile.gif

Mike, I have a Tip and am considering doing the IMS bearing retrofit as a DIY. Any pointers or tricks on dropping a Tip on a 4S? All the info I've found is for manual gearbox & 2wd.

Thanks

Paul
