I'm thinking of buying one like this Black & Decker model to keep in my garage (to use when the battery on my 996 goes dead because I neglected to plug in my battery maintainer):

Do these things work when you need them?

I have one, and bought it upon recommendation of several friends that had them. Very happy with it. Also a good one to have around in the car after an extended park (eg. at the airport) without a chance to plugin a battery tender.

Have used them for a very long time.

The one I have now was a Xmas gift and it has an airpump on it. I use the airpump alot.

I don't know about the one in the link, but I have them in all of my garages...yes they work...I mean they are essentially another battery...LOL. PS they also work to open the front trunk if the battery fails.

Unless you're in a hurry I think you're better off to trickle charge the dead battery. Charging a dead battery by running the car is hard on the alternator. (Letting the battery die isn't so good for the battery, either).
