Tiptronic Trouble

Tiptronic problems on renntech.org all seems to very different. My problem has been described before, but I need a few more pointers to help me with my research. My '97 993 transmission slips ONCE only during the uphift cycle 2nd to 4th gear. It happens in either 2nd, 3rd or 4th. More annoyingly it slips badly at every kickdown under acceleration in any gear. It feels like the torque converter lock-up clutch does not engage for a while after the gearshift. Can this be attributed to the Torque Converter Solenoid Valve? What are the symptoms of the TC Solenoid Valve failing and how difficult is it to replace/repair. Could this in any way be connected to the Tiptronic Control Unit? Thanks!

The first step is to get the car plugged in for diagnostics to see what engine or tiptronic fault codes are logged.

Thanks, I have an off-the-shelf OBD2 reader, will that give me transmission fault codes? I see folks on the forum talk about PST2, is that a Porsche specific diagnostics tool and do they work on 993s?

Durametric, PST and PIWIS testers all work with most OBD 2 complaint vehicles.

PST2 and PIWIS are Porsche tools (read very expensive) and Durametric is a 3rd party tool specifically made for Porsches.

What is the condition and level of the transmission fluid? How many miles?

I had the ATF fluid changed and the filter replaced. That did not cure the problem. The car is a '97 993c2 with 60k miles. I read up on the Durametric tool and the tipronic control unit diagnostics. Plus, the owner's manual gives a reasonable description of the actions to take. I just have to locate one of those tools... A friend may have one.

I had a similar problem with my 968 which I beleive has the same 4 speed auto as your 993.

A bearing went releasing metal shards into the oil which destroyed the hydraulic pump and required a transmission rebuild.

It was catagorised by "flaring" shifts.

My 996 also required a rebuild for flaring shifts. Unfortunately as I have learnt, there is no simple repair for auto transmissions, a full rebuild is the only option.

I'm currently 2 to 2 on rebuilding automatic transmissions with Porsches, ZF make crap transmissions.
