I am having problems with my gears in my car. Occasionally my car cannot find reverse, 1, 3 or 5th gears. If I move the shifter around a lot it will find the gears again. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this?

Sounds like your shift cables. Loren will probably be able to help guide you with this

Okay I am new to this forum, who is Loren? I would like to get this resolved before the car becomes totally inoperable

Loren is the site admisistrator. He has a lot of knowledge with P cars. Hopefully he will respond to your post and give you some guidance. He has done a lot of short shift kit DIY's and has experience with the issues of the shift cables.

It would help if you stated the exact year and model of your car and mileage. As well as past issues (if any) with your transmission.

Sounds like a disturbed shift cable (forwards-backwards) adjustment, as "phillipj" said, there exists a special adjustment tool to solve the problem.

If you're comfortable with it, get the rear on jack stands, remove the under covers and check if the linkage is still properly connected. They tend to go loose sometimes. Here's a picture.

Check where the A and B are pointing.

Do you know of a website where I can find the tool?

I lost all my upper gears (R,1,3,5) last spring. Moving the shifter upward felt like moving into jello. Turned out to be a simple shift cable retaining clip that cost $21.80. It might be worth looking into.
