For the past week it has been starting in 1st gear (D not M), I tried stoping and turning it off and restarting it and it starts in 2nd. This happens only intermitently and I haven't pin pointed what may cause it. It has happened more in the first start up of the day than through out the day.

Any ideas?

The transmission 1st gear start is normal when the air temperature is cold. (winter months)

It is designed to act this way so the catalytic convertors can heat up quicker in order to maintain emmision targets.

I don't think air temp has anything to do with the initial start in first gear. I live in the desert--my 06 S always starts in first gear on initial start in the morning even if it's 100-110F outside. You're right --it's designed that way to rapidly heat up the cats.

I understood that PSM deactivation results in 1st gear launch. Have you tried PSM on and PSM off to check the differences?

Sorry guys...missed the "above" responses due to my double screen...
