I'm closing in on 25,000 miles and the brake pads look like they will need to be replaced soon. Least from what I can tell. Some posts state the rotors should be replaced at the same time the pads are replaced. Others state rotors should be replaced once they are worn out. What are your recommendations? How can you tell if the rotors are worn out?

IMO

Lots of shops will change the rotors when they change the pads. It is easy and they do it because it reduces the number of comebacks, but lots of times, they are replacing rotors that have plenty of life left in them. On rotors, look for cracks radiating out from the holes connecting to each other. If the hairline cracks are connecting from hole to hole, replace. If the hairline cracks make it to the outside edge, replace. If the rotor thickness is below or really close to the minimum thickness, replace.

Loren - just to clarify - does any crack > 7 mm long put the rotor past service limit or is it just for > 7 mm connected to edge of rotor ?

I used to think it was if the crack extended from one hole to another hole but I can see that would not really be possible the way the holes are offset ...
