2001 911 for sale in CA...need your opinnion, please

Hi,

I am looking at this 2001 996 6 speed with almost 60k miles on it. Owner claims clutch, rear seal, and other work has recently been done by Monaco Motors in LA.

I am thinking about having Monaco perform a PPI on it. Ebay item number is 120473053338, and I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice, as to proceed with this offer or walk away because of something else...

I think the car looks great. It has the hard to find aero kit and a ton of carbon fiber in the interior.

mileage is fine too. These cars are built to run. I wouldn't go a penny over 32K for it however. I think 30K is a bit high for a 2001 with 60K miles. I paid $37K for my 2003 with only 29,000 miles on it but it didn't have the aero kit but it does have a bigger displacement 3.6 vs. 3.4 liter. I would walk away if it goes any higher. You can find another car for that price which should be a little newer and lower mileage. Also I bought my 2003 over a year ago so the value should have come down. I would look for a 2003 if possible.

If the seller claims a lot of work was done by a single dealer, you can give him a call and ask for a repair history. Not as good as PPI, but this may be enough to give you reasons to walk away.

I agree. The milleage is a little high for the money. Or vice versa....anyways.

Is there any reason for going after 2003 cars? An upgrade done by the factory, or mod that makes the 2003 more desirable?

Also, the 3.6 is better than the 3.4 just because of power/torque or is there another reason?

I assume, based on everything I am reading, that the best combo is Manual 6 speed tranny, water cooled and normally aspirated engine.

Do you all agree?

I plan on calling Monaco and ask them about this car's history.

Go for the 3.6 if you can afford it. There are so many Porsches for sale with desperate owners. Take your time and try to get a warranty.

Hey,

There are a number of differences between the early (99-01) and late (02+) cars. The headlights are different. The interior has a lot of improvements including glove box, trip computer, 3 spoke steering wheel, etc. The motor is the biggest difference, larger displacement and another 20 HP.

When I was in the market (early spring) I wanted an 02 or newer car. I could not find one in my price range so I ended up with an 00 and I have not regretted it.

Make sure you look at the interior of the early and later cars to see if that is important to you.

Hold out for a newer 3.6L (year 02 or newer). Some very nice engine improvements. It is likely to have fewer engine problems. You should be able to find one for the same price... it is a buyers market. Six months back I purchased a 2003 C2 with 12,000 miles for $37k.... I thought I overpaid a bit... but, the car is PERFECT! AND RUNS AWESOME!!!! The little extra was worth paying for. What a car!!! Good Luck!
