Hey guys,

I'm doing research on the 996, since it's becoming a fantastic value (sub 20k). I posted similar thread over at rennlist, but it looks like there are no DIYers over there.

I've read all about the immediate shaft bearings leaking, nuts shearing off and all the other issues. What exactly is the cause of the issue? It looks like the bearing fix is relatively easy, if you can get the bearing removal tool (or some sort of a puller thingy)... but what exactly is the cause of the nut falling off?

Second common issue is the rear main seal - again this looks like an easy fix once you get the trans out of the way. The how-to I've seen doesn't even use the RMS tool to push the new seal back in.

Third - heads and blocks cracking. People at rennlist seem to go for a $12K rebuilt motor swap, which seems a bit excessive on a $20K car. Are there parts and kits available for rebuild? I bet I could rebuild one for cheaper than 12K + core.

Finally the LSD 220 option - how rare are they on 99 cars?

Any insight would be appreciated :)
