Hi Guys,

I just bot a 2003 Boxster S. It only came with one key. Does anyone know where to buy a key blank so I can have a spare? It doesn't need to have the remote head.

Thanks so much,

Bob L.

You can buy a key blade from Suncoast Porsche for around $20. You then have to find someone that cuts sidewinder key blades. Cost anywhere from $0 to $50. First 2 I got took to VW dealer. They cut them for free. Only one of the 2 worked and not very well. Then you need a key head. You can buy a lighted head $27 from Suncoast or a remote $116. They have to be programed by the dealer. My closest 2 quoted $100 and $150. Be shure to take all the keys you have when you go. This has turned into a summer project. First dealer (120 mi away) neglected to tell me I needed both my keys until after I got there. I have an apointment with 2nd closest (210 mi) where I bought the car at the end of the month. I hope to have 3 operational keys. This is a little more complicated than you would think. You also can order a key from a dealer by Vin#. The quote with programming was $250. Hope this sheds some light on the subject.

Bob:

You can also have your existing key "cloned" by a locksmith who is equipped with the correct "cloning" machine. That will give you a key that opens the doors manually and that starts the car, but no remote functions. That exact operation cost me $55.00 total on Long Island, in New York, and it included cutting the key blade blank and cloning the innards.

From what I understand, that "cloning" is different from what the dealer does, in that the dealer actually programs the central alarm unit to the key, and it uses one of the remaining of the four original codes available. That is why you have to bring all of your keys to the dealer if you go that route.

Regards, Maurice.
