Catalytic Converters Warranty issue

Hello..new renntech member..new 996 owner. Just recently acquired a 2002 C4S.

Unfortunately it's been a bit problematic although minor, but puts it off the road. One bad tire..wore through side wall..was run to low is our guess, and now a dead alternator. Thanks renntech for the DIYs..not to bad to get out.

The main issue we are having is the dealer tells us the cat warranty ended in April of 2009. Getting p0420 and p0430 errors..and it sounds rattly. C4S has about 102 000 km on it. The warranty book in car says 8years/130 000kms. I had to get book and show it to

service mamager..he photocopied it..said he would get back to us. Now at nearly $5000cdn to replace..warranty would be nice..lol.

So my questions is has anyone had experience getting this done under warranty..had problems getting it covered. Maybe shed some light on as to why it ended after only 7 years? Did a VIN check,it's a 2002..lol. Near as I can tell from

hours of searching, seems 8yrs/130 000kms is a federally mandated emissions warranty, same in Canada as US.

They quoted 5 Grand for a cat and alternator? What else are they changing out? There is no way this work should cost 5 grand

5k for the cats. I assume that's installed. alternator is out being repaired, no porshe service center involved..lol

I had cats replaced under warranty, almost past the US limit of 80,000 miles. There were no questions asked, no problems with the dealer.

If you end up in a situation where you can't get the warranty to pay for the cats, then I'd get some high flow cats like the ones at FabSpeed. They should be quite a bit less. You may also be able to find some used cats at a parts reseller for much less money.

Your profile does not say where you are located. If you are in California, your dealer may be relying on the state law that only mandates coverage for 7 yrs/ 70,000 miles.

However, federal law (specifically The Clean Air Act, which can be found at 42 U.S.C. 7541) trumps any state law and requires coverage for 8 yrs/80,000 miles for the catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and on-board diagnostic device.

A manufacturer may not refuse warranty repairs under the Clean Air Act's performance and defect warranties, unless it can prove that an aftermarket part is RESPONSIBLE for (causes) the warranty claim, so don't let them give you any of that B.S., either if they try to go that route.

Take a look specifically at subsection 7541C (3) b. of the Clean Air Act for the language relevant to your defective cat. You might want to print that section and educate the dealer.

Profile needs a bit more work I guess..lol. In Canada. Seems Canada has same laws as US 8yrs/80 000M or 130 000km. Not sure why they think warranty is over..they are original cats.

Hi there. I have a 2003 C4s with currently 90K miles. I had my catalytic converters replaced THREE times. Yes, that's 3 sets. Just recently, The last set went at 81K miles, which is exactly 1K miles over the Federal emissions warranty at 8 years/80K miles. Call Porsche. They covered it gratis, because I told them that this has been a problem with my car. Exhaust develops a rattle and it shakes the innards loose of the catalytic converters. Off the record, the technician told me that he replaces a lot of them, so it's definitely an issue.

I had three sets of cats replaced in the past 4 1/2 years. the first two were covered under warranty. What I had a problem with was after the second set went the dealership would not do the work under warranty. I stated that the warranty should reset each time they were swapped out, they stuck to the warranty guides...makes no sense.

The cost I was quoted for a the repair with OEM parts were $2100 all in. My 996 is a C2 not the 4S but I don't think it that would add an additional 3K in costs.

For this last fix I went with the Fabspeed highflow cats. A few things; they make the exhaust LOUD and if you are like me and already have the sport exhaust the car is INSANELY LOUD!!!! It sounds nothing like a Porsche anymore...except maybe a CUP car. Its actually a bit too loud, you are constantly aware of it.

Another thing to be aware of; if the installer does not set the sensors correct it will throw the check light engine and in some instances where they are installed correctly it will still happen. There is a warning on the Fabspeed website addressing this.

Forgot to mention that the work was done in Canada and the price quote was Canadian.

Well looks like they are being replaced under warranty. Service manager called and said there ordered. Looks like he did a good job of getting it sorted out. Now wonder how long they will last..won't get another set I doubt under warranty.
