Differential oil

Hello Folks...,

I will have to change one of the differential 0 ring tomorrow.

I know the differential oil use by Porsche is a special oil looking like motor oil in color and smelling different then motor oil.

Is it possible to buy this differential oil somewhere else then at the Porsche Dealership.... VW Dealer.

If your talking gear oil, I no of at least one company that makes racing gear oils Porsche s that would be an alternative. Unfortunately you'll have to do some googling...there pretty big so you shouldn't have to look to deep'

I use Amsoil SVG 75W-90 (changed it at 60K and 120K). It may not be less expensive than the Porsche brand, but fairly easy to order and you should have a dealer somewhere close to you. Based on the aggregate testing performed and published by Amsoil (and available to ALL manufacturers), it's hard to beat. Unbelievably smooth shifting...

Amsoil is not on the Porsche approved lubricant list (this often comes up, and it's at Amsoil's discretion not to spend the required agency fees). That does not mean that this company does not make some of the best performing lubricants in Superior, Wisconsin (Part of our GDP since '72).

Our company sells an awful lot of the SVG to the track guys down here. As a matter of fact, we are a regular advertiser in PCA, San Diego Region.

When you say "differential 0 ring" are you changing because of a leak in the gear oil? I ask because I think I may be leaking gear oil - I see wetness comming from the pass. side trans where the lever goes into the transmission for gear changes. Is there a seal there? Thanks.

Hello Bluebox03....

I was talking about the O'ring with Porsche no 98639702700.

The O'ring is expensive ...around $70.00.The O'ring is the one that goes on the shaft....

The O'ring i changed is not the one that Loren showed up.

The O'ring is smaller then that and by the way i use to have many Porsche and i had to change this O'ring almost all of the time and always in the same side....pass side.

I also bought the original gear oil also very expensive $40.00 liter.

By the way Loren if you still have the schema of the differential i will show up the O'ring i had to changed to fix the leak.

I have heard that the oil can be sucked out instead of removing the cover plate. On a Tip it is a PITA. I have done it once that way. Is there a link to how its done successfully? Not a lot of room between the splash shield. I even bought of drilling and taping the bottom.
