Hi and G'day all,

This might be a big ask, but I'd like some help with this car. It's an '08 model 987 Automatic and has had a hit on the front, causing the airbags to pop.

What I'd like to know is how does the steering wheel/airbag release? I can't see any bolts/screws. This car is foreign to me, as Euro cars are not as common as Jap here in Australia.

Also, does anybody have any tips on removing the dash/crash pad? The T-bar knob has no obvious screw etc for removal, I removed all the screws (I think) for the audio/climate control unit and having a hard time pulling it out. Hmmmm... not forgetting the panel under the steering wheel, feels like it wants to release, but won't budge on one side. I almost suspect that there are hidden screws in there, just to upset the average punter!

In hindsight, I probably should of outsourced this job to somebody who is familiar with these models, but the crazy thing is... I like a challenge! Camrys/Corollas are just getting boring for me!

Since the car is RHD, a lot will be different than US/EURO LHD cars. I would take a look on a UK forum for faster and more detailed info.

Actually, I have tried on a UK based forum, and sadly no replies. Maybe it's the fact that the Aussies will take the ashes in the cricket ;)

Anyways, the only issue I have with this job is removing the driver's airbag, and t-bar shift knob. The rest is OK, and not a problem anymore. I'm having some issues with parts and supply, so I'm trying to keep this vehicle semi-mobile so I can shift it around the shop if need be.

Being left hand drive or right hand drive won't change many things... the t-bar , airbag, audio and climate units would all be the same, just the other way round. Same amount of screws and clips holding things in.

Oh well, if I have time tomorrow morning, I'll give the airbag another shot, and then probably end up calling the dealer for some advice. Sadly, alot of dealer staff are completely useless, and have no idea. I should know, as I unfortunately was employed in one for over 10 years.

Do you need to remove the dash or just remove and replace the driver and passenger airbag? The latter is not quite as involved. I think you can replace without dash removal, at least I believe you can on a 986.

Sadly, when the passenger side airbag explodes, it rips the dash apart and takes the windscreen into glass heaven. So the complete crash pad will need renewing, along with airbags, pre tensioners, ECU, etc.

This job might turn into a nightmare, as parts supply looks like being an issue! Oh welllll! :rolleyes:
