The serial number belongs to a factory rebuild engine with two years warranty.

No need for database or whatsoever for this, a little German can help, the letters AT in the engine # stand for "AUS TAUSCH" which is "EXCHANGE". Two years warranty is a standard on factory rebuild engines.

Thanks very much RFM!

...and the obvious question then would be: what does the "M" in front of an engine number mean?

For example, mine is: M960366226604

Any other insight as to the meaning of the numerals would also be most welcome.

M has been used for Porsche Motor series numbers since 1980.

For your car M96 is the main engine series and the next two numbers 03 designate year/hp/liters. The rest of the numbers are the serial number.

Your number indicates: MY2002 - 3.6 liter - 315 HP (232 KW) engine used in the Carrera 2/4/4S
