Broken Bolt/Stud

Ok, need some good advice out there on how to remove these bolts that have broken off...these bolts are the ones that are holding the headers in place. Broke one this morning :cursing: and another one this afternoon... :cursing: ...expecting to break one more... :help: ..I was already expecting since my car is over 10 years old...I ordered new bolts from EBS racing(about $2.00 each) and a new set of gaskets...but now, I still have three bolts that I have not removed yet...I soaked it with PB, so I'm going to try again tomorrow to remove these stubborn bolts...I know some of you guys out there had dealt with this type of situation before...thanks in advance!!

yes stud puller is often used.

R U asking how must it it costs for a shop to do it ?

R they broken below the surface ? if not a double nutting method usually works,,,

yes, one is below and two are still sticking out

You can buy a special tool at the parts store for about 20 $.

Are you saying they broken flush with the engine? Are they still protruding?

Also, what kind of room do you have to work in? Is this an engine removal coming up?

I removed a sheered head bolt on my other fun car last month, but I had plenty of room to work with.

one is still protruding..but the other two are broken flush with the engine...no engine removal...the car sits on a jack so not a lot of room to work with...was going to work on it this weekend but I couldn't do the work due to other things I had to do..so, my fun car is just sitting in my garage right now blocking my fun yamaha R6...

If your space is limited, you might want to try using a right angle drill to drill a hole in the center of the broken studs before using the e-z outs.

Also, could you post a link to the page on the ebsracing.com website that lists the bolts? Or does one have to order the bolts on the phone with them?

If you have done a few broken studs (I've had the pleasure, but not by choice :eek:) then you probably know that the most crucial step for success is to make absolutely sure that you drill the hole with the smallest bit at the absolute center of the bolt. That will allow you to drill progressively bigger holes so that you don't start out with a too small e-z out that might break off inside the hole you have drilled into the middle of the broken stud. If that happens, you'll have a much tougher time because the e-z out material is a lot harder than most drill bits.

So, wait until you have drilled a decent sized hole into the middle of the stud so that the e-z out will be beefy enough to not break off when you try to back out the stud.

I've gotton stuff from EBS a couple of times over the years. They seem to know what they are doing. I just got an email from them last week advertising several rebuilt motors for what looked to me like good prices - JFYI.
