There's a company (companies?) out there providing a kit for the conversion, which uses some stock 997 parts such as the headlamps, signal lamps, etc. The bumper skin and fenders must be "hybrid" to meet the 996's trunkline and door cut, which are different than the 997. Those parts are definitely not going to be Porsche stock.

I did a quick search on the Googles and found www.prestigebodykits.com, looks like what you'd need.

but as I understand it will not worth the cost ,time and effort you put in and what you get back

Personally, I think the 996 is cleaner (visually and aerodynamically) than the 997, and I LOVE my 997. Leave yours the way it is, unless you can make it go faster. Cheers.

Agree, except for those silver stripes in the headlight assemblies. If not for those, the front end is just such a smooth integration of aerodynamics and original 911, it's just excellent. I always thought the MKI headlights just looked too big, but liked the lines (after de-pumpkined). The MkIIs are still too big, just not as much, and those silver stripes just emphasize the diff.
