Hi all,

I have been trying to fix an intermitant buzz emanating from under the defroster panel for some time now. The car is under warranty but Porsches attempts at a fix have been at times nothing more than bodged attempts with clips being left off or dropped and left under the dash leaving me to fish them out, nobody takes as much care I think as an owner would, so here I am again trying to fix the buzz.

I think it's related to the dash panel under the defroster panel resonating at a certain point when the car flexes and settles in a certain position. The black trim is the one the tweeter sits in, it looks to have a clip securing it and the dash to the bulkhead.

Does anyone know if the trim should sit flush with the foan strip along the windscreen or can anyone help on how to get under the trim?

Thanks

Will do..I keep forgetting everytime I'm down the garage.

Out of curiosity, does your car have leather interior? I am asking as my 996 had a similar problem. It turned out that the leather covering the dash body close to the windshield was a little loose and thus kept making a buzzing noise. Had it at the dealer and they could not really make it go away. In the end what did the trick was to get in underneath (removed the glove box for it) and spray just a tiny bit of silicone spray into the area between the dash body and the covering - the noise never came back!

My guess would be that some of the leather bond has come lose in some places. Makes for a really annoying sound sort of like pulling off scotch tape or velcro. The silicone spray just fills the void and makes the noise go away. If you try it, remember to only use a little bit, not soak leather. If your buzz is the same I had, works wonders ... BTW, the way I isolated where the issue was exactly is by sitting in the passenger seat while the car was driven and then let my hand wander ofer the dash gently until I found the placement of my hand that would make the noise stop. Once I found the exact place, I was able to reproduce the buzz by just gently pressing on the place and let go. That's how I know where to attack the problem from the inside wiht the silicone spray.

Let us know what's happening.

Are you sure it's not the rear view mirror? I had a buzz from the mirror, but it sounded like it was coming from the sport chrono, and all kinds of other places.

Next time you hear hit, try (gently) pulling and twisting on the mirron and its base.

Just a thought since you appear to be at wits end.

Yeah I'm sure it's not the mirror thanks. I stripped the dash down completetly glovebox out, all heating ducts out and top defroster panel and A-Pillar trim out and if I tapped slightly on the dash in a certain position the noise could be heard. I un-did one of the top dash fastening screws and noticed the top dash flexed a little so I place a washer behind the fastening lug and threw a load of high density foam just under the plastic part of the trim (under the black plastic which is under the defroster panel). So far so good time will tell.
