hi all,

i have just bought a 12/2004 4.5s cayenne on ebay (yes i know) but from a crowd with over 200 sales this year and 98.5 positive feedback. Here's the rub---

they phoned and said that there was a ticking coming the engine and that it was going to be fixed. Diagnosed as lifter fault but i know the engine uses two cams and springs. after waiting a month on parts i am now told that the small end is away on on of the pistons and awaiting a new piston. Sounds strange, i phoned a couple of POC's who said never had a problem like this and three top independants who said similar.

The vehicle is dec 2004 with 33,000 miles on it, it also has a LPG system fitted bought for £16,511(black on black) which i feel is very cheap---no reserve auction

Finally my question has anyone ever had a problem similar on a 4.5 with relatively low miles or does it sound like a put off, i am informed that the engines are bullet proof and i so want to buy the vehicle but not a lemon.

P.S. i have to fly to england to just see the vehicle i am in N. Ireland any help accepted

I would walk away, I have an 04S with over 90k and never come across such an issue. I would be worried that the LPG conversion has toasted the engine

I remember this vehicle going on ebay a couple of weeks ago or so. It looked clean and LPG on a Cayenne S is ok if installed correctly, however Porsche do not recommend it and forget about OPC Warranty. Never heard of the problem he mentions, sounds like bull to me. Anyway, it could be that the seller has decided he could get more for the vehicle and trying to put you off the sale (most likely).

Thanks what i think is happening, you know when it really hard to tell if it's a bargain or a nightmare, i went over to midlands last sept to look at one the same,, only to find the thing had a new boot floor and vin number (am i glad i knew where all the numbers where the guy just disappeared when confronted-which left me with a £280 round trip lesson, history repeating itself) i know most people don't get LPG but i have run a s500 merc on it for 80k without a pip, it means you can rally enjoy the vehicle all the time not in short bursts. i phoned the previous owners who had no problems with it and the OPC who serviced it 2k ago no problems -- very strange but there's always that niggle it along way to go for a lesson and murphy's law is against me

Cayenne's will not work on LPG, not mechanically (valve problems etc.) and not electronically (disturbing and fault codes randomly), a real goldmine for the workshops because the warranty expires.
