Hi All,

40k 2002 boxster engine has developed a rattle/rumble at the rear, very hard to tell exactly where from but it seems to be kind of erratic and not tinny like a heat shield.

Rattle is most noticeable when stationary and seems to go when engine is rev'd or when on the move. What is odd is that the rattle is distinctly worse when there is high electrical load i.e. it appears or gets more prolific if you turn the A/C on or if you press close on the electric window up switche when the windows are already closed.

Has any one got any ideas

Thanks

Edd

Check for a Cracked a/c pulley wheel or bad pulley bearing. Had the same thing. Went away when A/C was off and came back when the A/C was on.

I had an annoying rattle at idle once. It would go away once I drove off. Finally traced it to a loose exhaust clamp that connects one of the u-pipes from the cat converter to the muffler. Wait until the car is fully cooled down and then shake the exhaust parts under your car by hand. If it is a loose clamp, you will be able to feel the pipes move back and forth as you pull on the pipe.

Right folks, thanks appreciate your thoughts and advice so good to get quick responses when things like this are bugging you. Was in to VW corrado's for years and the forum i used to use for the was fantastic for help and advice and from the quick responses here it seems this forum follows suit.

Juts had all the covers to the engine compartment out (for the fist time - what a ballache) and the alternator was visibly vibrating, quick tighten up on the belt tensioner pulley and noise has disappeared - this explains why more noise happened with varying electrical load.

One to log for future reference - amazing how much the noise transmitted right through the engine area to the back end with all the covers on and the front sound deadening in place. On appearance you would never have though the rattle was coming from the front of the engine

Regards

Edd
