Hi everyone,

I’ve been shopping for a used 996 C4S and I found a listing for a 2002 996 C4S manual with approx. 56k miles for $29,995. The catch is that the transmission and front crankshaft oil seal were replaced at around 24k miles. The vehicle history report says the car was never in an accident. I’ve heard by word of mouth that there may be a factory defect with 996 transmissions, but I haven’t found a statement like that in the forums.

Should I stay away from this vehicle or is there nothing to worry about? Thanks for your advice.

Regardless of what your final decison is regarding this specific car, take your time and buy the best car (and seller) you can afford and find. Be patient. There are a ton of Porsches for sale right now. Great time to buy for cash buyers.

And make sure you get a Pre Purchase Insection (PPI) done by a qualified dealership or indy shop.

See if you can find out who replaced the transmission and why. He should have the reciepts. Go talk to the place that did the work. If it sounds sketchy move along and look for another car. Like White987s says there are LOTS of Porsches for sale at very good prices

Regarding a design flaw in 996 transmissions that is false. Engines yes :o transmissions no
