I have been a bit confused regarding alternatives to the factory fill gear oil in my 996.

I read in one post that the "Delvac 75w-90" was a replacement for the "Mobil lube PTX"(factory fill)

I went on to the Mobil 1 wesite and posted the question to them.... Here is their reply..

We do not claim that the Mobil Delvac Synthetic Gear oil 75W-90 is a

So I guess that gives some clarity.

Thought this might help others looking to service their tranny..

I use Delvac in my track car. No problems at all. Not as easy to get as the PTX.

Okay I found the "Shell Transaxle" (factory fill) at Sunset for $22.51 per liter (3 liters needed.) About $9.00 shipped to SoCal

The part number is 999 917 546 00

Hope this helps othe folks doing their tranny service.

Yes but i couldn't get a consensus on what was good or not. Some people like Redline some not. Royal Purple I do not know about. I'm just a bit gun shy about the wrong lubricant after replacing my engine. I know there are other options available but I felt I couldn't go wrong with the Shell.

Thanks for your input :D

I just bought a round of Amsoil svg for transmission and transaxles. I'll report back how i like it once i've filled it up and drive it around a while. 22 bucks sounds expensive for the shell stuff.

Agreed. But it will be the last time I change it while I own the car.

Maybe I should get it from the dealer at twice the price and have them do the service as well. :o Maybe they will cut me a deal and only charge me $750.00

Not a chance in H**L that will happen

tranny service went well. The old fluid wasn't bad, fairly clear, but did have a stronger smell than the new stuff. Car now shifts better thats for sure and i'm happy. HOWEVER, one side note. While I was under there I decided to change out the front differential(1999 C4) as well. THere I found a problem. How the Bleep do you get the lower plug out? I think it's plug B on Lorens post in DIY. The plug butts almost up against the top of the reservoir so I can't get a socket on it. Tried a 17m wrench and all I did was round a corner:( Plug is now beat up and not a bit looser! Any tips?

Its tight, for sure. I put the socket [not a deep socket] on the nut first, the wiggled the ratchet up there and attached it that way.
