Custom cupholders 996 ?

Recommended Posts

I have made several options. First I just cut the center console where the window switches are. Not very elegant and tall drinks wouldn't stay well. So I then made a custom holder out of fiberglass and secured it to the removable panel next to the passengers knees. Was going to cover it in leather but eventually decided on a different option. Suncoast Porsche sells a cup holder that sits in your arm rest. However, you have to have your arm rest cover up and your elbow hits the arm rest cover when you reach for the cup. So I cut a hole in the arm rest right over where the cupholder is. I have been working on fiberglassing in the hole so it looks finished. When I find the right material I will cover it. Currently, tyring to get Alcantara to match my headliner. This position works great for me as the drink is never in the way and I can easily reach it when I want. My elbow doesn't hit it either. I can provide pics later if interested.

I don't have a current photo, but I took a piece of aluminum from Ace hardware and put it between the upper and lower consoles. Then I put an accessory plug on the drivers side and hung a cup holder off the passenger side.

Here's what it looked like early on. Now it's all painted black and has the cup holder.

I like the idea! Interested in what type of cup holder you used, an updated photo would be great!

I love my ultimate cup holders.

I have looked at the ultimate cupholders before, but I am wondering if they will work with an open (at the top) cup without spilling on to the carpet mat.?.?

Anyone have cupholder ideas or mods for 996? Mine is a 00 Cab.

Thanks in advance!

There are a few OEM options: A flimsy cupholder that fits into holes in your driver and passenger air vents, a DIN-sized set of cupholders from 2001 that would require you to shuffle your radio and CC unit, and I think that Sunset sells an insert for the compartment in your armrest (my wife has one and uses it often). If you want to get really crazy you could update your "horseshoe" and vents with the 02-05 cupholder design. I had the latter and it was the best of these options, but not great.

Well that depends on two things: 1. how high the fluid level is from the top and, 2. how you drive. I use them with "open" containers and don't spill FWIW

I was wondering if anyone has done any modifications using the ashtray area--as this is useless to me. Maybe a pop up style that you find in some MB cars.?

I am also interested in thoughts on moding a cupholder from a 6 series BMW, as that option looks kind of promising.
