Hi - I have just commenced a major service on my TT and have found that the air filter is quiet damp with oil - is this normal? How does the oil get here?

The car also has a O2 sensor fault which has been suggested to me may be a faulty MAF sensor confussing the ECU. Would it be possible that the MAF sensor also has some oil on it and this may be messing with the way it senses air flow? Can the MAF sensor be cleaned?

Thanks,

Derek

I assume you mean quite damp....Oil on the air filter is not what you want nor is it normal...now how it got there?...What filter are you using? If it is K&N or BMC, Perhaps the filter was over oiled to start with? Did you throw any codes? Regardless you can clean the MAF with electronics spray (do a search). Without the actual codes we can't really respond appropriately.

What color is your air filter. If it is red it is a cleanable K&N filter and the oil is normal since you have to applied oil after cleaning it... If you do some search on the net you will found ways to get the MAF cleaned but I got my doubt about the efficiency of the cleaning process. But I know some people who succeeded. Sorry Wross we answer almost at the same time...

It is a K&N filter and the oil is slightly red in colour... I don't know the specific code, but the number related to an O2 sensor fault (according to the workshop)

We need the code...K&N filters are sometimes over oiled (to add shelf life). It has been suggested they be washed and re-oiled with less oil (oiling kits are available from K&N).
