How often to Renntech members change the oil on their Boxsters. I am so used to changing oil every 5,000 kms with regular oil on my other vehicles that even with full synthetic on a performance car I cannot get my head aroung Porsche's suggested oil change interval - just seems way too long.

I am going to change every 6 - 8,000 kms (depending if mainly highway or in city between changes) but just wondered if I should always change the filter at that time, or if every two would be good. I use OEM filters.

I do my changes at 8,000 kms, so about 5,000 miles. I also change the oil just before I put it away for the winter months.

Use a fresh filter and crush ring. (I do anyways)

Always change the filter (and crush ring). In fact, I have seen recommendations to change just the filter 1/2 way through the oil change interval.

I change oil and filter every year at 5-6000 miles. Works out to dealer service on even years on home service on odd years.

Ditto for me, in fact the dealer said that they recommended that the oil be changed every year, or approximatly 1/2 the recommended interval that Porsche specified.

I always replace the filter and aluminum ring on the filler plug at oil change time.

I thought I read somewhere that if you were due for an oil change prior to winter storage , it would be better to leave that service until you bring the car back out in the spring......something to do with oil breakdown with new oil sitting for a prolonged period of time. Any thoughts?

I've also heard that it's better to change the oil in the spring due to anything that might be in the oil "settling". This advice was for my lawn mower, but the same theory would apply.

Everything I have seen, of value, says the oil should be changed prior to winter storage. And this is what I have done the past 3 hibernations. Why have 7-10,000 miles worth of contaminants sitting in the oil during 5 months of winter storage? I rather have fresh oil in the car...with minimal (if any) degradation taking place.

I agree with White987S regarding fresh oil for storage to avoid contaminants doing their evil work all winter. When in doubt change in the spring also.

As far as oil settling, that can be a problem if you do not start the car periodically. The oil will drain off the parts it is supposed to protect. With air cooled cars I squirt some oil directly into the cylinders at storage and again before firing it up. For the only two year storage I've done over 10 years ago. At home I prefer "exercise periods," but I've never lived in snow country.

I think I'd empty some oil and add some to combat any drainage. Or just change it again.
