I'm trying to find out if anyone can tell me what parts were changed to create the extra horsepower. The dealership can't seem to tell me what parts were changed in the X50 parckage.

thanks

Brian;

The X-50 has bigger turbos and intercoolers, a different exhaust, a beefed up transmission (either manual or tip- but no sport shifter on the manual-still an option), 'upgraded' factory propriety ECU mapping to take advantage of the above, and last but not least, the factory warranty applied to all those goodies.

All above is now standard in the '05 996TT S.

The X50 parts breakdown (in general form) appears in the '04 'Tequipment' brochure (this booklet also shows various aero kits, wheels, stereo upgrades etc.) as if it was available as a retrofit, and the '05 Turbo S brochure as published by PCNA.

Shame on your dealer!!

Regards,

Frank

Yes the Intercoolers are the same as those used in the Turbo GT. My mechanic should me that is the only way to tell from the outside the difference between a standard TT and the X50 package. You look up from beneath the rear bumper and they have longer "blades".

You can also tell if you put your fingers through the rear bumper slots and touch them. The stock tt intercoolers are smooth, while the X-50/GT2 intercoolers will be ribbed (no pun intended).;)

Has anyone tried retrofitting X-50 intercoolers onto the stock turbo, and do they make any difference to the BHP?

No, for the simple reason that it will be very expensive. A much easier route to more power are the various tuners who offer alot more horsepower for a reasonable amount of money.

I don't think that they make extra horsepower all by themselves. They provide extra cooling ,so it's an added benefit, especially if you're in hotter climates.

Actually, cooler (more dense) air provides more horsepower, thats why you have an intercooler, so if the X50 intercoolers are more effective, they should in theory increase power output by allowing the Turbos to deliver a bigger charge. Question is - is it worth the cost?

In theory yes, but again the size of the GT2 coolers is not that much bigger than stock. You're also limited by the amount of air that can be directed to the intercoolers by the side intakes.

I'm no expert in these fields, but I don't see any data that can substantiate any claims of added horsepower by the solitary addition of intercoolers, in the 996 turbo's case, at least.

Any experts want to chime in?
