I checked a couple of your posts Tool pants and phoned some of the parts place but I want to make sure its the right part & also you had mentioned in that thread that the part # had changed. I was not sure if you meant that one or not.

Thae parts guy gave me the corresponding Bosch #

I do not see that Bosch part number on on the 2.5 sensor or the box it came in. Maybe an internal part number used by the aftermarket company that sells them?

As jonathan notes there have in fact been 4 sensors since the Boxster started production in 1996. He has the correct Porsche part numbers. The first is for the 2.5 and the next 3 are for the e-gas cars as they changed part numbers.

Your sensor 986 606 125 00 went into production on January 31, 2000 - more resistant to contamination.

When the 2.7 and 3.2s first came out in 1999 it was 996 606 124 00. You could not put in the January 31st sensor in an older e-gas car unless the computer was reprogrammed per a Porsche bulletin issued April 18, 2000.

986 606 125 00 has been replaced by 986 606 125 01, so something has been changed. I do not know what since there is no bulletin from Porsche.

So to be safe speak to the aftermarket parts guy. Have him open the box while you are on the phone and give you the 986 part number and make sure they match.

This picture is a 2.5 sensor so do not even look at it for part numbers. Has no application on your car.

Great reply it was really informative

I talked to the parts guy and he gave me the 996 606 124 00 he said if it didnt do the trick I could swap it

should I go for the 986 606 125 01? and if I did would my car need the patch from the dealer ?

However I have a question for you is either MAF better? 996 606 124 00 or 986 606 125 01 just wondering cause it may be in my head but I think I had more power before all the problems started.

Anyway I put the MAF in and the OLD problem seems to be gone, so you guys were right! , but my idle is erratic & I feel less power, when Im at the lights the idle will dip up and down. It seems to me going from 750 - 590 rpm its annoying cause when it gets low the car will shudder like its going to almost stall. Any ideas? Should I be raising my idle rpm? Or will going to the Newer MAF solve this?

Thanx guys I really appreciate the help!

That sensor, 996 606 124 00, will not work in your car as a direct replacement as it is the first e-gas sensor and you have the second version. I do not know if a dealer can even "back date" your DME software to get it to work - I would have to ask Peter.

Since you have 986 606 125 00 you need that number as a direct replacement you so that you can replace it yourself.

I have a feeling the third version, 986 606 125 01, would also be a direct replacement without a reprogram with the PST2. That is because Porsche has not issued a bulletin on this sensor, like they did with the second version. I would have to ask Peter to be sure.

Make sure you get the right part as they will not usually let you return electrical stuff. The problem with the aftermarket is their info is not up to date and they do not know there have been 3 versions of the e-gas sensor.

Also shop around. There was a long thread here a few months ago about the sensor for a 2.5. The dealer wants $370 but a few guys shoped around and found it for $180. I think from the partsbin. The company must have figured out something because they then jacked up the price because Porsche was selling it for so much more.

Thanx for the info TP,

I called Porsche Dealership and they told me the 986 606 125 00 is discontinued and the 986 606 125 01 is the replacment part and as you suspected there is no software patch required. Will keep you posted

986 606 125 01 $ 332 is what he quoted!

Ok With a little persuasion I got the parts guy to take back the 996 606 124 00 & got him to give me the 986 606 125 00 like you recommended, boy what a difference she is raring to go initially the intake was popping with the suction but then it stabilized.

Thanks for all your help.

My Idle is looping!! will this settle after a while? or should I mess with my Idle seems low will raising it take care of the looping?

986 606 125 00 has been replaced by 986 606 125 01, so something has been changed. I do not know what since there is no bulletin from Porsche.

...

My car is a 2000 Boxster S and came with 124 00. It's throwing out error codes and I got a 125 01 since it's supposed to be more resistant to contamination. From what I've been reading, it requires an update to the DME bec of the diff voltage readings.

Sent my car in today and the dealership told me it has to be a 124 00. 125 01 is just a wrong part. They're not aware of any DME updates for the 125 00 or 125 01. ****! Do you have any reference to a TSB for this?

Thanks a bunch!

They are wrong - they need to read TSB 1/00 2445 Air Flow Sensor -- dated 4-18-00.

"996 606 124 00 Old style HFM (2.7 and 3.2)

986 606 125 00 New style HFM (2.7 and 3.2)"

The TSB also included update instructions for the PST2 to reprogram the DME.

125 00 was updated to 125 01 some time later.

Thanks! That's what I thought. Just gotta give them the TSB number and date.

Jeff from Sunset import sent me the TSB in pdf format. Great aftersales service from those guys. He could've just ignored my email but didn't.

Ok, I printed out everything and showed it to the dealership here. What they're saying now is that the TSB is ONLY for North American cars... there's no similar TSB for ROW (Rest of World) cars it seems.

So.... to get them to do it, I need to sign a disclaimer??!! It's not a big deal for me and I think it should work all the same. Their also saying that my current MAF is 996 606 123 00 and not the 124 ones. Ain't that ancient!!

Does anyone know otherwise? I intend to just go ahead anyway...

996 606 124 00 - 1st sensor for e-gas - $471 (Bosch PN B3130-128499)

986 606 125 00 - new style sensor - $492 (Bosch PN B3130-149265)

986 606 125 01 - new style sensor - (Bosch PN ?)

Prices from Drivewire.

First off all of the supposed Bosch part numbers starting with the letter B are bogus...they are not Bosch part numbers. Secondly the 986.606.125.01 is the current sensor for 2.7 & 3.2 Boxster 986s and it crosses to the Bosch part number 0 280 218 055.

I brought this matter up to Porsche Asia and they said it can be done and the TIS is valid. Got the car back today from the dealership and everything is running well again. Just thought I'll keep everyone in the loop.
