Here's a summary of the problem from the dealer (2005 997 C2, 70k miles, 3.5 months out of warranty):

As I mentioned on the phone, during our road test we’ve discovered the engine had a major oil leak from the valve cover. We then lifted the vehicle and found a hole in the valve cover. (I took pictures and put a quarter to relate the size of the hole) We then removed the engine from the vehicle to further diagnose the problem. We have discovered the oil scavenging pump for bank 1 has seized. The pump has a drive that goes into a notch on the end of the camshaft. The drive and notch have broken into pieces from the pump seizing. There is also damage to the timing chain and chain guides. To repair, we would need to replace the cylinder head due to the cam bores/bearings are machined and center cut to match. We would need to split the engine case to replace the damaged timing chain. The total parts for this repair alone cost $5500.00 and the 30 hours of labor is $4950.00, making the total estimate $10,450.00.

Anyone else ever see such a failure on their 997-1?

Yes i have seen this before on 996, mostly with damaged timing chains as result, which blows a hole in the valve cover. Is the engine still the original one? If yes, i would insist to give a factory rebuild engine in warranty since the car is a famous MY 2005, a problem would be the milage but i would go for it anyway. The best of luck.

With those cost figures you are bascally at the cost of a remanufatured engine, although you might not get the core deposit (at least al of it) back. And with the reman engine you get alot more new parts, etc. and a warranty. Kind of surprised that the dealer has not suggested this.

I was equally surprised that the dealer didn't mention the remanufactured engine. I finally figured this out on my own through a lot of questions about warranty. We'll see what the cost of the remanufactured engine will be - I learn tomorrow.

My C2S 2005 engine failed last year. the car was out of warranty and still the dealer replaced it for me for free! I am very happy with the car and made 9000km in 7 months since the new engine. I wont drive without a pre-owned warranty cause these cars are expensive to fix when they fail!!

Good luck!

This link scared the living **** out of me!!! I have a 2005 C2S with 35,000 KM on it... Haven't had any major problems with the motor or anything else till now... Should I do any kind of special check up to make sure everything is fine? Do all 2005 models break down? Please send me advice on any kinds of preventative steps I should take?

P.S I have an extended warranty active on the car, Should I extend it every year just in case?

You have already done the best precaution by activating an extended warranty on a 997 MY05, if the car have still the original engine IMHO. It sounds hard, but so true.

What do you mean by original IMHO? and I didn't get what you were trying to say when you wrote "It sounds hard, but so true" ?

Thanks

Original engine = factory installed when the car was delivered new at the dealership. Have you read attentively the posts above, and elsewhere on the board ( i personally know it by experience), about the durability of the 997 Carrera MY05 engines? I think it is outrageous and hard to hear.

I read some stuff on the forums, but figured its just individual cases...

I guess the best thing I can do is just continue extending my warranty until I want to sell the car...

Thanks for help RFM, Appreciate it....
