Yes, the top can be raised and lowered manually, but you must first disconnect the pushrods that act on the clamshell and on the top.

The one drawback (aside from losing the convenience factor of just pushing a button) is that there is then nothing securing either the top or the clamshell in the open position. As a result, the top could conceivably "catch air" at speed and the clamshell will flop around when you hit bumps, etc...

The top catching air is the bigger, although more remote, concern.
