I have my Ignition switch steering lock assembly out of my car ..How do I remove the key assembly from it to put it in my new assembly.I bought a starter switch originally ,because the car wouldn't shut off when I drove home from work.I changed the switch, and found out the steering lock assembly was the prob.It is on a 99 boxter 986.Can some one please give me som feed back..I have had this car since jan.And I have probably driven it 6 times, because something is always breaking..lol..I am just ready to do more mods, but I can't crank my car  ...thank you for any feed back you can give me..

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Pull cover (collar) off the steering lock.

3. Insert ignition key and turn to position 1 (ignition on).

Insert a steel wire C with a diameter of approx. 1.3 mm (max. 1.5 mm 0) into the bore next to the ignition key (arrow) as far as it will go. Pull the lock barrel with induction coil out of the steering lock housing.

Note: Inserting the steel wire C unlocks the lock barrel in the steering lock housing.

4. Carefully unlock and separate the plug connection on the lock barrel (at the induction coil for the immobilizer).

Installation

1. Ignition lock with the pawl depressed must be in position 1 (ignition on).

2. Press on the pawl of the lock barrel (locking pawl). Insert the ignition key and turn the key as far as it will go to position 1 (ignition on).

In this position, insert the steel wire that was used for removal.

3. Plug connector onto the ignition coil B. Position the induction coil B and push the lock barrel all the way into the housing. Turn the ignition key correspondingly, if necessary, until the lock barrel has been pushed in fully. Pull out the steel wire C in this position so that lock engages.

4. Connect battery ground cable. Perform function test.

5. If a new transponder (new lock barrel with new key) is used, the new key must be taught.

Thanks!!changing the ignition assembly was a piece of cake..The info on changing the key lock barrel was very helpful..I had everything else figured out ..that was my only obstacle that I couldn't figure out by just looking at it.Thanks again Loren :renntech:

Carefully unlock and separate the plug connection on the lock barrel (at the induction coil for the immobilizer).

Would it be possible to expand on this step. I was able to get the lock cylinder out, but that connector has me completely stumped.

Well, I'm glad to see we're not the only ones with ignition/lock switch assembly flu. Hopefully, the steering wheel does not need to be pulled for this op.

Thanks, went quite well. Well worth the $100 or so for the part and the peace of mind that the car won't have starting issues down the road.

Hi,

I cannot turn my key back to the zero position, it springs back to the right so the steering won't lock & the dashboard lights stay on. Also the windscreeen wiper lever does not work

Is this the problem above that I have?

Replacement of the electric part (ignition switch) can solve your problem in most cases. The switch is located on the rear of the steering lock.

I would put a high probability that it needs the updated switch/lock cylinder assembly. That was one of the symptoms we were experiencing.
