PCM2 to retrofit Boxster 987

HI all,

I'm thinking to retrofit my 2007 porsche boxster 987 with a PCM2 navigator module. Now I've just the entry level CDR24 without bose system.

I've seen that this is quite possible, the only difficult is to find exactly the compatible module. (with, w/o bose, ampl , ecc).

Anyone of you did do that without problem?

Any suggest to find on line shop or dealer to buy the PCM2?

I guess that here in USA is simplier to find porsche parts accessories or used parts, instead of Europe I mean.. :rolleyes:

Many interesting document but I didn't find exactly the upgrade to PCM2 mybe your link regarding an upgrade to PCM 2.1 (the equipment with external DVD navigation drive..)

Any case you know where I can find a new PCM2 to buy? (Better new .), Any suggest..My be web site etc..

Right now I check on ebay but without success

If your car is a model year 2007 then you need the hardware that is described in the TSB I quoted above.

You can not put an older PCM 2.0 in your car.

Check eBay (other countries), put a "Wanted" ad in the Wanted forum here, and check salvage yards for parts too.

There is a link to Sunset Imports on the top of the page, you can purchase a new unit at cost + 15%. You said you have the Sound + system, it may be better to put an aftermarket GPS head unit and use your current speakers. I bet you can save money and have a better system. You will need to add a Gateway to have an ipod interface with the PCM.

An aftermarket GPS take a time to install. and need expert people to install mybe? Then I need a double din fitting with the same "frame" of PCM. Where can I find? :huh:

You asked where to get the parts.

I suggested:

1. Out an advertisement in the Wanted forum here.

2. Check with your local car parts salvage yards for the parts from a wrecked car.

I haven't installed an aftermarket system, by the time you look at the cost of upgrading to the PCM and compare it to the installed cost of aftermarket system, you may want to go with the latter.

The key thing to consider when upgrading the audio unit is that the PCM 2.1 is now outdated and maps cost a fortune compared to aftermarket systems from pioneer and kenwood. An OEM finsih can be achieved thanks to aftermarket fascias / surrounds for the kenwood/ pioneer head units. The PCM 2.1 needs to be matched to the navigation drive in terms of hardware level , so if they are sourced from different sources they may not function correctly. Also to bear in mind , there are two types of PCM depending on whether the car is also equipped with BOSE amp/ speakers. I've helped many trying to retro fit the OEM PCM so know what is involved , i would advise fitting aftermarket rather than OEM , especially if you are looking for a quick install and a cheaper option. Fitting OEM will cost upwards of 1000 USD even if you can find the key parts second hand. Even after the install , the system will still be second rate compared to a factory fit OEM as the diversity antennae will not be available. if you wanted to replicete the PCM 2.1 and navigation system completely as per porsche install i would estimate a cost upwards of 3000 USD before labour. This would result in navigation unit running the latest available maps from Porsche which are 2007 . There are no options to buy maps direct from Navteq or teleatlas so its dealer prices or a second hand disc from e bay. Either way you wont find a newer map than 2007.

I just did this retrofit..wasn't cheap but I like keeping things all OEM..PCM 2.1 plus nav cost me about $1700 (new PMC, used nav, antenna and wiring), additionaly $500 for install. I am sastisfied with the 2007 maps..streets around here don't change much.
