I've got a 1999 boxster 986 2.5 and the keys i got with it have 2 remote buttons, one for the doors and the other for the rear boot release. The one for the boot release doesn't work. Is there something wrong with either the key or the boot release mechanism or is it simply a newer key head that's been fitted to the key itself?

ROW My 99 986 remotes have only 1 button, just the doors. Later MY's have 3 button remotes, doors, rear trunk and front trunk, i think your car use a 2 button 996 remote, there are a lot of on the road. I could be wrong.

I have a 99 986 and my key has both the doors and boot release buttons. As far as I can tell they are stock and have never been replaced. I have only had the car about a year or so.

there are 2 cables in the back, check for a broken cable

My '99 996 key does not pop the trunk either, it only unlocks the door. Any suggestions?

Dear Sir, I have a 99 Boxster with the 2 buttons on the Key Fob. One locks the doors and sets the alarm and the other one opens the trunk. You have to point it directly at the trunk and hold down the button for a few seconds and the trunk will pop open. It works fine. Thanks, Jerry

Interesting, so my rear trunk release stopped working from the remote and after I read this thread, I thought well maybe I'll check that cable then... sure enough.... one of the cables was broke. The other one (which i assume is the one attached to trunk release lever on the inside of the vehicle works fine. Anyone know the part #s / procedure to replace the other cable? How hard of a job is it to fix?
