Hi everyone,

After a heavy down pour or after I wash my car, my engine area has developed a screeching noise. After I put the car in gear and step on the gas, the sound will go away. Any ideas what this is? Is it the Polyrib belt slipping?

I have a 1999 996 C4. No warning lights of an kind.

Overall, it does not effect the car, but it is embarrassing as the noise is really noticeable.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Yes, probably a slipping multi-V belt, i would take a look, perhaps time for service and belt change?

thanks for the reply, the car is at 83K miles, belt was replaced at the 60K mark.... I am going to swap out the belt to see if the condition continues....I will post results...

you might also want to check on the water pump pulley and the other ones. I had a shrill noise on my boxster when the coolant pump bearing/shaft gave away and it started rubbing against the pump cover.

I heard the screach for a few weeks, but then the whole belt broke. I found out one of the bearings had locked up. It was twisted but it did not damage the engine..

I would check all your bearings because it can cause a lot of damage
