Group,

I couldn't find reference to this anywhere, so I have to bite the bullit and ask you all;

With PSM Off, driving at Highway Speeds, the transmission will not upshift to D6, unless I Tiptronic it up to D6.

Is this normal?

on a V6 .. no ... doing 70 mph on the flat your in D6 no matter what setting PSM is in .. where you going a slight uphill ? that might kick you down to (or keep you) in D5

Cant talk to the other models

In my experience, this is normal. My Cayenne S will never shift into D6 when PSM is deactivated.

Thanks Dennis, I also have the V8 so if yours is doing the same thing then that answers it. :D

Dennis, I don't think I've ever had PSM deactivated on one of the Cayenne's...I have with the Boxster. Why would you drive a Cayenne with PSM deactivated? I would think it's especially important with a SUV.

I don't do it very often. I agree with you - there isn't a reason to do this frequently in a big SUV.

I think it is fun if you are interested in a little bit of sporty driving every now and then, but that's about it. The Cayenne will very quickly move through the gears to "D6" if PSM is activated, which is not always the best for that type of driving.

I'm not planning on taking the Cayenne to the track, or doing any "drifting".

PSM Off provides a sportier gear shift, revving higher and thus providing better torque/power. Or at least it feels such.

With PASM in Sport setting and PSM Off, this big pig sheds a little weight in the feel.

I find that on the highway, if morons are in my way but I see suddenly and oppurtunity to move out and around the spaced out commuter crowd, I turn off PSM instead of paddling on the Tiptronic. Nobody knows what these Smart Cars, Mazda's, KIA types are going to do so I prefer to have both hands on the wheel and not typing at the Tiptronic so as to avoid catastrophy.

Also, when I am going to be getting off the freeway and I have some off ramp to negotiate, having PSM off allows me to kick down the transmission with more sensitivity, I find anyway.

The AWD system is pretty stable, so unless it is pouring rain or icy/snowing I don't worry about having PSM off.

And when up at the Ski Hill, with the kids in the back seat on a frozen parking lot, it's better than a ride at Disney World without PSM on!

So many fun ways to drive the same vehicle, Porsche Engineers rock! :D

Turning PSM off doesnt shut down all the safety controls like traction control and so fourth. It just makes them come on a little bit later than normal. I tried this with some snow on the ground and at first the wheels were spinning but then everything got activated. So it seems to just delay the reactions of the system and give you much better tranny shifting.

I don't think these statements are necessarily true. My 04 CS shifts into D6 at exactly 40mph with PSM off (same as when on). Unless there was some revision to the control software with newer production dates/model years. I did take a picture to show this. With PSM off, the only difference I noted was a slightly higher rev before switching from 2-3.
