I't pretty straight forward, in the back on the passanger side just above the air tube going ot the throttle body.there is a black cap that says hydraulic. Twist it off and check the dipstick connected to the cap. When the engine is cold the fluid should be at the cold mark as indicated on the stick

Owner's manuals are not very expensive.

For a MY2002 996 order: WKD 996 001 02

US MSRP $32.07 - but you can likely get it for much less from Sunset Imports (Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost).
