My friends 01 S engine fan runs when the engine is hot even when the key is off and removed. I have a 97 and the fan does not do the same. Is there a problem with my cooling fan? The fuse is good.

:help:

"Normal" for you and me, I would suggest allowing your engine to idle for a few minutes upon reaching your location to cool down.

Let me give you a caveat though - too long and you will heat up again, you will know this point because your fans will kick on to help cool down.

Personally in a warm climate, I would do 1-3 minutes [depending on your driving style.]

Turbo engines do a warm down to prevent "coking" of the bearings, but that's another story.

On the older cars the engine compartment fan will not run when the key is out. That started in 2001. And then it cycles on and off as the DME searches for the engine compartment temp.

When I turn off the ignition on my hot 1997 the fan goes off. On our local Boxster drives the only cars I hear the fan on after we park are the newer cars. The first time I noticed this was years ago when the 2001 first came out.

Maybe there is something wrong with my car. If you fan runs for whatever reason then I think it is a good feature.

My 1st Boxster was a '97 and the fan came on even after removing the key. I was in Vegas at the time... it is possible the dealer reprogrammed the DME to cope with the warm climate? My '99's fan never has come on after removing the key (San Diego).

For what it’s worth:

In MY03 manual under Engine-compartment blower, there is a warning that states: Risk of injury. After the engine is switched off, the engine compartment and coolant temperatures are monitored for approx. 20 minutes. During this period, and depending on temperature, the engine-compartment blower and radiator fans may continue to run or start to run.
