Hello everybody, my name is Jerry. I am a previous Porsche owner (2001 Boxster) and PCA member. My best friend and I were Porsche guys, but he up and bought a Ferrari, the good news is that he gave me a sweet deal on his '02 996, which is in incredible shape, AND he just put a brand new set of Michelin Pilots on her! So, the Boxster went to another friend of mine, and I now have a 996. I don't know that much about them, and he bought it two years ago used as well, so the history is a little blurred at this point.

I have a few questions, first, where would I locate the engine serial number, I would like to determine if it has ever been replaced (the car has 68K)

Second, is this an aero? it has the skirts and looks like an aero, but no rear spoiler.

And third, it has the factory Bose sound system, but I think I would like to upgrade the amplifier... anybody done this?

Oh, and anything I should look for in mods? this car seems WAY too fast. Another friend of mine has a 2000 with a 3.4 and the difference in performance is remarkable. plus the exhaust sounds a lot meaner than others I have heard.

he is a pic. I know everybody expects p-porn from a first time post.

:welcome:

Easiest thing is to do a search.

Click search and enter:

+engine +serial +number

The subject has been covered many times before.

Those look like these Carrera sideskirts: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopca...tec996_pg24.htm

Usually the letter X at the end of the engine part number means it is a rebuilt.

Totally awesome ride, yes.gif congrats.

congrats bud.

the porsche service dept should be able to check service history and tell ya if it's got a reman. the serial number thing isn't always reliable.mine got replaced at 13K miles a few years ago. no issues so far with 55k miles. it's a great thing if you have a reman replaced under factory warranty.

you might have the porsche sport exhaust thus the aggressive sound. check under the hood for options list.

Congratulatios on the new (to you) car, you will love it.

As for the upgrade to the stereo, start with the speakers. The OEM speakers are basically junk, any upgrade to the amplifier or head unit will not give you much results through the stock speakers. Do a seach on the posts here and on the other sites and you will find lots of information and opinions. I used Focals but many also use MBquardts. I started with the speakers, and even with a stock amplifier the results were quite good. Went on to an amplifier which helped even more. Still have the stock head unit and CD player. Again, even the best amp etc. will still have poor sound unless you get decent speakers. You will have to deal with the "MOST bus" i.e. fiber optics but there are ways around this.

Good luck and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!
