2001 Tip Boxster wont shift out of Park

My 2001 Tip Boxster wont shift out of park. Engine starts fine, and shift lock button will go down if i hit the brakes. Never had a problem with it earlier...overnight bam.

I've also tried to take it out of park with the engine not running...no go....

Any suggestions?

Have you tried rocking the car fore & aft while trying to shift? Used to work on a friend's VW Passat.

thats exactly what i did, and after about 20 minutes it released....thank god!! it's my main driver... but what would cause that?

Was the car parked on a hill, without the handbrake fully pulled first, before the P was engaged? The weight of the ( moving slightly ) car can give too much mechanical pressure on the lock system inside the Tiptronic, if the car is not hold by the handbrake first.
