Cayenne S Titanium

Happy New Year,

This is the first time I've used this site so please forgive with me if I get a little overzealous.

I finally did it... A couple weeks back I picked up a used 2006 Cayenne S Titanium Black with tan and black interior. Wow!!! It was truly a deal I couldn't pass up and it's what I wanted when I got my last car but wasn't willing to pay the new pricing.

So I have a couple minor issues I'm trying to determine and also plan to do a few upgrades over the next couple of weeks. I learned a bit surfing the posts but the search feature isn't returning the results on some of the things I'm trying to determine.

Issues:

The driver's side rear tail light has quite a bit of condensation in it and the passengers a little bit. The dealer told me it would simply evaporate if I leaved the lights on. Well, that was a fib. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to dry these out with little pain? Also, I can't quite tell but it seemed when I got it washed this past weekend that there were fresh streams of water in the driver's side.

Second is I get a message when I turn on the head lights that says "check left cornering light". After reading the posts I learned my car has some sort of lights that evidently pivot while you are driving and they are different from the standard headlights. (it was missing the main owner's manual) I don't really understand what or where these are. I'm used to changing headlights bulbs in my older cars. Can anyone point me at how to tell which bulb it is, where to get the bulb and a general idea of how to replace.

Upgrades:

I think I landed on going with the NAV-TV Opi-P iPod connector and NAV-TV Tooki-P Bluetooth adaptor. (I believe my Cayenne already has their Sirius kit as I do have satellite radio but am not totally sure how to verify who's it is.) I've installed other OEM integration systems in previous cars so I'm going to give it a try myself tomorrow. Any one advise against trying it myself? Also, does anyone have the backup camera and or the video input from them that allows video to be played on the Nav screen? I'm not really sure I have any need for them but it sounds really cool and might be fun.

I ordered the roof rails, roof protection strips and cargo mat today. I think I remember having found a post where someone already installed the roof rails themselves so I don't think I'm scared to do this myself. (Interesting how when I looked up the parts pricing on the dealer's web site that the price the parts guy quoted me for each item was 50% higher than their web site. As soon as I mentioned it he lowered the prices on everything with no push back. A bit scary)

However, the major thing I'm contemplating is adding the Sport Design Package to add some extra sportiness to the body styling. The dealer told me the Titanium edition already has the side skirts so I only need the front and back which was quoted right at 2K. The catalog shows that you can order these in the color of your vehicle but he's not totally sure. I am also thinking of putting the body side moulding on when/if I do this. Anyone have these options? Any idea how much I should expect to pay for installation on these.

Whew!!! I think I better cut up my credit card before I go totally nuts.

Steve - Congratulations on the new Cayenne. I bought an '04 Cayenne S yesterday and couldn't be more pleased with it.

From your post it sounds like you bought it at a Porsche dealer, so isn't it certified? The taillight is a safety issue so it should certainly be covered under warranty. As with the headlight. I don't know why they would even sell a car with outstanding issues like that.

There is too much technology in these cars to figure out on your own so you need to read the owner's manual. Since the dealer shafted you on this (I would still lean on them to provide one) in the meantime click on Documents in the top bar of the Renntech.org homepage. The third option down is Owner's Manuals. Isn't Renntech great? Click on Cayenne owner's manuals and download the one for your year-model. The download button is in the center under the item description toward the bottom of the page.

I read your post more carefully and noticed the part about the water entering your car. I would be so pissed! I believe this was a known issue with the '04's but I can't speak for '06s. The way you can find out is looking up the TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) for your car - again, Renntech to the rescue. Right next to the Home button at the very top of the Renntech.org page is a DIY Menu. TSB's are kind of like recalls except Porsche doesn't notify you because it looks better for them. Whenever a car is brought in for routine maintenance they are supposed to check that the TSB's have been complied with and fix it for free. Also, when a car is certified the shop is required to check these. All kinds of strange issues like wind noise and leaking coolant are known and you should not be responsible for paying for these repairs.

Second thing - I was thinking about the roof rails too, what kind of deal did they cut you for them?

Congrats, I can try a couple of the issues you mentioned; the tail light housing comes out easy by opening up the tailgate and undoing a couple of screws then the housing comes out. I would take out the bulb assembly and use a towel on a chopstick or something to dry them out. As stated you need to find out why water is entering.

As fas as the cornering light it's the bulb right beside the xenon that points off to the side. When you turn your wheel it lights up in that direction. You need to remove the full headlight assembly ( please get an owners manual if you don't already have one as all the instructions are in it). Once you have the assembly out you can replace the bulb. My issue was the actual housing as I tried two bulbs but kept getting the error. The dealer replaced the housing (for the cornering bulb) under warranty.

As far as the audio/BT/etc. To me there is too much electronics here to do it myself, so I would farm it out to someone who has done many cayennes before (but that's just me)

I heard the Tooki doesn't work with '04s however this was from a sales guy who I don't trust (I know, insert joke here). Have you heard from a credible source that it will (ie Nav-TV)? There are many negative reviews on other forums so I was also looking at the Mo-bridge or Dension units for iPod functionality.

I resolved the cornering light. It is pretty **** cool how the entire headlight assembly slides out.

I was able to figure out how to get the tail light out. It had about a half cup of water in it. I can't tell if it had separated across the top seam. The back cover doesn't even come close to seating properly. I was able to put the tail light in the oven on 200 for about 15 - 20 minutes and it got all of the water out. It seems I still need to go back to the dealer and have them get me a new lighting unit. But... at least I don't have to look at the stupid light as is for the next few days.

I got the roof rails for $618.62 and the matching roof strips for $252.49. I found this link http://valleymotorsporsche.oemdealer.com/ for a Porsche dealer who has a pretty good on line accessory store and just so happens to be the second closest one to me. If anyone else knows of a better place to shop, please share.

I jumped in to work on installing the NAV-TV stuff myself. I got a little ways in and I'm sure I can probably do it but the local guy quoted me only 2 - 3 hours to get it done... I've got an appointment for next Thu.

I've surfed around as well trying to determine which of the three products would be the best. Some people are saying the MoBridge and some are saying Nav-TV. Almost all are saying to shy away from the Dennison. The posts I found that were stating there were some issues with the NavTV units were about a year old and they've released a couple upgrades since then which supposedly solve those issues.

If anyone has knowledge of all three and would like to weigh in to help it would be appreciated.

The 955 and 957 Cayenne tail light lens are insulated away from the bulb receptacles( a good thing). Most condensation moisture enters a crack on the outside top seam of the lamp housing and stays trapped between the outer lens and the insulation barrier. Getting all that water out requires hair dryer heat or exposure to consecutive 80F+ days.  

 

I'd still like to find a suitable sealer material that would appear inconspicuous and water-tight....
