Hi-just acquired a '07 C2S with 13,650 miles. This is my first "modern" 911. Last porsche was a '03 Boxster S so not too familiar with the oil pressure gauge and what should be normal readings. Electronic Oil Gauge shows Full...all lines filled. Oil Pressure gauge when engine is cold reads Maxed. After oil gets to normal temp, pressure goes down to 2.5-3 bar at idle & up to 4.0-4.5 at 3200rpm (6th gear). Is this what I should expect? The maxed out oil pressure when the engine oil is cold kind of freaked me but realizing that the viscosity is still dense then maybe, no worries. Since I just got this car, was concerned that perhaps the oil sump was overfilled. No dipstick makes it hard to tell whether this is an issue or not.

Sundance,

From the Carrera Owner's Manual:

"With a warmed up engine and at a speed of 5,000 rpm, the oil pressure should be approx. 3.5 bar."

No other guidance given for expected oil pressure.

Take note that the values suggested by whall concerns all M 96 engines, in other words all water cooled flat 6 engines till MY 08, MA 101 and MA 102 flat 6 DFI engines have a complete new design, inclusive oil circuit, pump, oil pressure and volume, controlled by the DME, which is called " electronic demand controlled oil pump". Depending the input values for engine speed, load, oil temperature and the expected change in engine speed the control valve possition is defined using a map in the DME. To make it a little more clear, for example: driving with the engine warm at 3.000 RPM in city traffic, the pressure needle reach 4 bar, you leave the city road and takes the ( flat ) high way, with the same RPM, the load will be less after a certain time, the needle drops till 2 bar. In similar circumstances the engine got no need on high oil pressure or volume, they have done this to safe fuel ( less power loss ) So don't panic, 997 gen.2 owners, if you ever take notice of this phenomenon. In case of doubt, contact your dealer. Hope it helps.
