or vibration does a bad motor mount produce? On my 1997 Boxster I have very annoying rattles behind driver and passenger seat when road is less than perfect. If I drive on a dirt road than rattles are continuous. I've already checked and lubrificated top cables/arms with no success.

"Loose Change" Sound from Behind Driver

Diagnostic: There is a rattle sounding as if you have some loose coins rolling in the engine compartment.

Cause: The cable for the cabriolet top being out of adjustment.

Details: There is a ball joint where the cable for the cabriolet top connects. If the cable is loose, the joint connection makes a horrendous sound. The cable tension needs to be adjusted.

Time in Shop: 10 minutes.

Repair Instructions: Open the top to a half-way open position. Then find the ball joints where the cables snap in. There is a bolt on top of the ball joint that turns to tighten or loosen the tension on the cable. Turn this bolt to increase the tension. You might also want to put some grease or lubricant into the ball joint. The cables just pop off the ball joint with a little pressure.

No, no differences if top is up or down. Same rattles!

I don't think it's a top related problem. That's why I wanted to know how a car with a bad motor support sounds like.

Thanks to everybody for help

Hard to figure out the cause of a noise over the internet with having the car in front of you. Could be the motor mount - could be something else.

The powertrain unit has 3 mounts. The front of engine mount had problems with the early cars, and Porsche has changed the design. Rev up any car and you will see how the powertrain unit flexs a bit.

This is the front engine mount. The rubber bushing would slide out of the metal housing. This permits the engine to touch the body of the car and you get a vibration noise under certain conditions. You can see in this picture the rubber bushing sticks out past the housing. It should be flush with the housing.

You should get the car in the air and see if this has happened. The cheap fix is to remove the mount and press the bushing back in so that it is flush. Then drill a hole in the housing and insert a screw so the bushing cannot move. Dealers do not do this, as they simply put in the new style mount.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Today I had the long transverse rear axle arms changed and no more rattles!

Silent blocks mounted on them take gap, but they're not supplied alone, you're required to change complete arm.

Fortunately they charged me nothing... everything was covered under warranty.

I'M VERY HAPPY!
