Add UMI to Gen 1?

Can the UMI (WITH USB!) be retrofitted to a Gen 1 997 or does this require the new PCM?

( I am aware of the Denison and tooki and do not want those. I also am aware of the cost to retrofit a PCM 3 and do not want that either. Just to know if the UMI will work...)

The UMI cannot be connected to the 997.1 (non-touchscreen) PCM.

A few people have done some preliminary investigation into fitting the new PCM (997.2 style) into the 2005 to 2008 911 but the cost seems very high ($3K plus) but I have not read of anyone actually doing it.

There are some after-market devices that interface with the fiber-optic MOST data ring that allow you to connect a USB based music collection and/or an iPod to the existing 997.1 PCM (also optional bluetooth for phone functions as well). These are in the $500 to $1000 range depending on make and options. I have one from Dension in my 2006 that I use for my iPod. I like it: much better audio than an FM transmitter based adaptor and the songs are shown on the PCM display. It has a USB input that functions the same way. The interface is a bit clumsy but is fine once I got used to it.

I would suggest either installing a mobridge or dension unit , these can interface with the PCM to allow an I phone , or I pod to play through hte PCM 2.1 and also be controlled via the PCM main screen. If you are looking for generic bluetooth connection for your phone then dension offer an add on module that emulated the PCM optional phone module allowing you to make and recive calls via the pcm. If you want to go with DVD input , TV reception and so on, then better to dump the PCM in favour of a pioneer AVIC or Kenwood unit. Look on caymanclub.net under electronics part of the forum for details on installation. The Non OEM route is better supported in terms of map updates and with the right install actually look better than OEM. The only thing you lose is the multifunction wheel or OBD control of the head unit.
