Hi, everyone.

Looking for some newbie information and haven't seen a specific answer to my probably dumb question, so posting now. I have owned (well, in 5 years I'll really own it) my 987 boxster for a bit over a week now. Since I usually only drive a couple of miles a day to work, I wanted to get a maintainer/charger when my Porsche service people looked the car over last week. I bought the $55 one (model number 98061198100). I live in South Carolina, but being that the battery was just replaced I wish to keep it working despite lower mileage than Porsche wants for it. Anyway, the directions say to plug it in the car cig. lighter first then mains and reverse procedure for unplugging before running car. Since I am running the plug from a room under the house and out to the car and it would be less convenient to unplug from the mains (their word not mine) first before driving, I was wondering if anyone just unplugs from their cig. lighter plug in the car and leaves the other plugged in while away? Is that a fire hazard? Is this a shortcut I can take or should I just follow directions? Thanks - thought I'd ask before I actually use the thing. I'm usually pressed for time in the am and just thought I could save a trip from taking my work stuff out the front door to car, then walking around back and under to unplug and then back through gate to car. But - I don't want a fire. So, again, thanks for any insight.

any on&off switch on the maitainer?

If not I would get a lamp extention cord with inline toggle switch.

How about an extension cord

to a point where you can reach to unplug the maintainer. I know it matters little which order they are unplugged because I've done it both ways for years with no damage. Though generally it is the car first, then the wall plug. But my unplug sequence is usually within 5-10 seconds. I generally just plop the maintainer and cord in the passenger floorwell and head off if I'm going out for a quick drive in a burst of warm weather in the midst of some inactivity. Then reset it up when I return. In 20 degree weather my car is sitting with its maintainer connected as I've been out of town for a week or so.

THanks! That is exactly the answer I was looking for. The extension cord will make it so I can quickly disconnect and do just as you do to keep everything in the floorwell after unplugging. Glad to know some good information.
