My trusty one button remote fob on my '99 996 seems to have died. New battery no luck.

I'm looking around for a new key fob and see a 3 button type (opens more than just the doors with the other buttons) and the 1 button type.

My question is:

- can I use a 3 button on a car that originally had only a 1 button type?

- will the other 2 buttons do something useful?

Lastly, anyone know a cheap place to get a remote programmed to the car in the SF bay area?

Dammad.

1) yes

2) no

3 button remote is for 996 cab. ( ROW ) or later 986.

Early 996 and 986 have no electric motors to open the trunk(s) via remote.

Thanks.. So the 2nd button would open my top? Since I have a cab.

My 1997 Boxster has a 2 button remote: One opens/locks the doors, the other opens the trunk.

Instead of paying an outrageous price from Porsche, you can get a spare key with a transponder blank to start the car for about $36.00 from this source:

Cathy Tuohey

Anderson Lock Co

cathy@andersonlock.com

Direct: 847-375-9425

Fax: 847-296-9259

They don't keep them in stock, but can get them to you in about 4 weeks, and they still have to be programmed. If you have an original key, any good Locksmith Shop can "clone" one of these blanks for about $40.00, and it will start your car.

Regards, Maurice.

I called emailed sunset to get a quote on a 3 button remote and was told that a 3 button remote won't work on a car 99-01 (1 button). Has anyone tried this on a 99-01 car (preferably a cab) that can confirm??

Interested in the same thing. Anyone confirm 3 or 2 button remotes working for 1999?

Nothing to release on a MY1999.

You still have a manual release on MY2000 and older cars.

The electronic release for front and rear lids came in MY2001.

My '97 Boxster has a two button remote that locks/unlocks the doors with one button, and opens the rear trunk with the other button.

I understand that. But does the unlock still function? Seems the 2 and 3 button remotes are less expensive to order.

Just ordered 2 one button remotes from Sunset today, $128@. If you look on eBay and other sources the two and three button are sometimes cheaper but I think from the dealer they are about the same ( list is about $185). I am looking forward to having remotes again, mine failed over the last few years, the second one over a year ago.
